Elm Trees

As a hobbyist or beginner you will enjoy growing and caring for bonsai trees

One of the best stress relieving outlets I have is working in the garden during the summer months on my Japanese bonsai trees. But on rainy days it's taking care of my bonsai and looking for a new bonsai tree to add to my collection.

As a beginner I started with the outdoor varieties,  a juniper bonsai and then a white pine because they are easy to care for and prune. You can just pinch the needles off with your two fingers.  After awhile I became more interested in the indoor tree species, ficus, umbrella trees, Japanese boxwood and flowering plum.

Indoor Bonsai
indoor bonsai treeMost people start off growing bonsai because they have been given one as a gift, and as a  beginner think that all bonsai trees are kept inside the house. This of course is possible if you buy the right variety or species. If you live in a temperate climate like the northern USA and want an indoor tree you need to buy trees like figs, serrisa or fukien tea bonsai. More about indoor bonsai trees

Outdoor trees
outdoor bonsai treeoutdoor bonsai (deciduous and evergreen) - These are the most common trees that people want to grow. You can keep them on decks, in gardens or even in a window box.  There is no limit to sizes from a few inches to as big as 4 feet. Outdoor trees need to be protected from wind and have a bit of shade. Many gardeners like to make an ornamental garden around them. Best for outdoors are your pine and juniper trees. Exceptional ornamental bonsai for growing on your patio or front deck. More about outdoor bonsai trees

Bonsai for beginners

  • Junipers are very good trees for beginners because the are easy to grow and care for - go here to view juniper bonsai trees.

After buying a juniper bonsai tree and learning how to trim and take care of it properly, I bought my first flowering bonsai. I am now starting to take my own cuttings and learning how to grow my own from the beginning, it was easier than I thought. I now sell mine at garage sales and to friends.

Buying tips:

Always buy from a nursery that specializes in growing and shaping miniature trees. Supermarkets and other stores may sell them but you won't get very good information about the tree.

Just because a tree is older or classified as one of a kind that doesn't mean it is that much harder to care for or that more expensive. View more about one of a kind, old bonsai trees.

No matter where you do buy from always ask yourself does this specimen look like a full grown tree only in miniature, if it doesn't it is not a bonzai tree.

When bonsai are made (we say made because they are not naturally shaped that way) there is always a favored viewing angle. Front, back, left and right, this is important to remember when you have them on display. They are miniature trees bonsai style.

The top view should enable you to see down through the foliage to make sure the branches are not covering each other completely and it should also have a few roots showing.

Bonsai comes from the Japanese, "BON" meaning tray and "SAI" meaning planting. The growing of bonsai or penjing is accepted as art form. In order for a tree to be considered a bonsai it must be clear representative of a tree in miniature.
