Chinese elm tree care
A Chinese elm bonsai tree is considered the best species for beginners learning how to prune, because it does not require a dormant period its very forgiving.
Elm are often sold as indoor bonsai and as such are acclimatized to indoor growing conditions. Chinese Elms grown indoors or in climates with very mild winters will remain evergreen, whereas outdoor cultivation results in a deciduous tree.
Though Elms should be able to cope with the adverse growing conditions indoors, they are never as vigorous as outdoor trees. To be entirely frost hardy your bonsai Elm must spend the Autumn outside to harden up for the winter. Never place a Chinese Elm that has been grown indoors straight outside during the winter.
Like most Bonsai trees the Chinese elm bonsai trees should be repotted in early spring. Repot after the first year, but not later than the third year. Repotting should occur at least one month before or after pruning. Do not do both at the same time. This is very stressful for the tree and can cause long lasting or fatal damage. New shoots should be pinched back and pruned in the summer growing season as needed to maintain the size and shape desired. Elm bonsai are not affected by Dutch Elm Disease as the beetle requires the volume of wood only available to it in fully grown mature trees.

Tools are needed to take care of a pre bonsai tree
There are very specific bonsai tools for every part of training and pruning a bonsai tree, and using the correct tool is the “best” tool and the best way to get the results you want or expect. Its not really necessary, for a bonsai beginner to purchase a complete set of tools. As your interest grows, then you can add to your collection of bonsai tools. With each new pre bonsai tree or one that is grown and partially trained by the nursery, you will out of necessity buy the tool necessary to perform that function.
The most important tool you will need to buy for pruning a prebonsai tree is a pair of bonsai shears. They will enable you to keep your new tree neatly trimmed and styled. Bonsai shears are available in many quality grades and even a mid-level grade is relatively inexpensive and very easy to use.
Almost as important as shaping tools are pots for bonsai trees. There are two kinds of bonsai pots: training pots and display pots. If your pre-bonsai is in the training stage and it will be, then the container you need to use is a functional training pot. Training pots are available made of plastic, mica, and glazed ceramic. It is essential that any pot have large drainage holes so no water gets trapped at the bottom, because waterlogged roots will rot and be fatal to your pre bonsai tree.
