For a patio area or the front entrance to your home, outdoor bonsai trees make ideal small flowering trees for small spaces. The enjoyable part of growing these small trees are that they can be planted in decorative containers.

Most small flowering trees lose their foliage in autumn and require a dormant period during winter.
A few favorite bonsai varieties of small blooming trees and shrubs that you can buy direct from the nursery are evergreens namely, flowering pyracantha and azalea. All are easy to grow and care for. Other varieties which are deciduous are flowering and fruiting. The trees in this group include flowering crab apple, japanese wisteria, korean lilac, flowering quince and mini jasmine tree.

Outdoor bonsai tree care This of course is dependant on how cold the winters get in your area and if you get any snow. If it doesn’t freeze hard you can let your tree grow naturally or keep trimming it to the small size you need.

Your bonsai must be maintained in a cool/cold environment during the winter season. You can bury your tree in the ground without the pot and then mulch up to the first branch. Choose a location that is protected from wind and sun. But not rain or snow. In spring and warmer weather your small ornamental tree should be positioned to receive morning sun and afternoon shade.
