Bonsai Containers
What Kind Of Container Should You Use? – This depends on what your pot or container is for and how it is going to be used. There are two types of bonsai pots: training pots and display containers.
Training pots are usually made of plastic, mica, and even wood. Mica training pots are a favorite and available in conveinent very large sizes.
Display pots are usually ceramic with either a glaze or an unglazed finish, because they must be frost proof if kept outdoors.
At the critical growing and trainng stage of bonsai, the pot must be large enough to safely hold all of the soil or growing media. that The container needs to provide the space for a healthy and stable root system, good branching and hold the desired trunk thickness. It is essential to have large drainage holes so no water gets trapped at the bottom of the pot. Waterlogged roots from poor draining pots will rot and be fatal for your bonsai tree, plus your bonsai tree will never really be ready to go into a display pot.
If your bonsai is fully developed or you are happy with it, then its time to choose a display pot.

The beauty of a deciduous or flowering bonsai is greatly enhanced when matched with a glazed pot of a soft, attractive color, such as: light blue, cream, or green.
Conifer and evergreen bonsai when paired with an unglazed pot of an austere color, such as: brown, gray or reddish clay, reflects their natural habitat. The length of your bonsai pot should be in relation to the height of your bonsai. A tall bonsai, requires a long pot, the depth of your pot should also be in relative to the thickness of your bonsai’s trunk, thick trunks need deeper pots.
