A beautiful specimen of a Buddhist pine bonsai tree
Podocarpus macrophyllus is actually known by three different names. Buddhist pine, Chinese Yew bonsai and of course podocarpus bonsai. This indoor bonsai tree is a dense evergreen bonsai with pointed, leathery yew like dark green leaves that are very stiff and pointing out from symmetrical branches. The podocarpus bonsai pictured here is 13 years old, 12 inches x10 inches and 18 inches tall.
The podocarpus tree which is actually unisexual, has male flowers in cones and female flowers composed of cylindrical thickened scales. The fruits are edible kind of fleshy and brightly colored. Best way to grow a Buddhist pine tree is in a container outdoors through the warm summer and then, indoors in a well-lit area during the Winter. Podocarpus trees can grow fairly well in poor light but like all indoor trees prefers full light but not direct sunlight.
Feed this tree every two weeks throughout the growing season outdoors, spring to fall. Podocarpus bonsai care for indoors during the Winter, feed every four weeks. This bonsai likes slightly acidic soil so you should feed it occasional small amounts of Miracid or something like it that your local nursery could recommend.
Because a buddhist pine or podocarpus bonsai has slow growing roots, you only need to repot every two to four years in the Spring. To keep this bonsai small pinch back new growth as you need to. Hard pruning should be avoided because of back-budding. Only use bonsai wire on young wood to shape your tree, old wood is far too hard to get to bend in any kind of interesting curve or shape.
