Evergreen bonsai trees to be grown outdoors
An evergreen bonsai trees are simply a miniature tree and therefore
should not be grown indoors like a house plant.
If you enjoy indoor bonsai then its only natural that you grow
evergreen bonsai trees in your garden or out on the patio. They
make wonderful small ornamental trees for the front deck or a
covered
patio that gets a few hours of sunlight.
The most popular
ornamental evergreen trees are the pine bonsai and juniper bonsai
trees. The tree that most people are familiar with is the karate kid
tree. The bonsai trees in this category must be
placed outdoors. Because these trees remain evergreen and require a dormant
period during winter. Varieties include flowering outdoor trees,
shimpaku
juniper bonsai, blue moss cypress, andromeda tree,
chinese elm tree and small
evergreen trees for a patio
Evergreen bonsai tree care
Most outdoor and indoor evergreen bonsai trees you buy have already been
through their training period, thus requiring only periodic trimming
and pinching to remain miniature. Pinch and trim back the new growth
to the farthest safe point. Never should all of the new growth be
removed.
Repotting must be performed periodically when root system has filled the pot. The reasons for
this is to supply your tree with fresh soil, and to encourage
a more compact root system. evergreens only need to be repotted
every four or five years.
Since tiny evergreen trees grow at different rates, this
schedule will not always hold true, therefore, you should examine
your tree's root system each year to determine if it has become root
bound in the pot.
Evergreens need the cool environment during the winter season.
Depending on your location and the weather pattern Thanksgiving is
the time to prepare your bonsai for its winter dormancy period which
lasts about three months.
One method is to bury your tree in
the ground preferably without the pot, the depth should be close to
the same as the rim of the container and then mulch up to the first
branch. Choose a location that is protected from wind and sun,
but not the rain or snow.
Another way which is favored by many growers that
live in very cold climates is to place your evergreen bonsai tree in
an unheated garage or shed. Your bonsai tree does not require light
because its in a dormant state, but will require watering possibly
around every two weeks.
Evergreen bonsai trees placed outside, on a patio or in a garden
Once outside,
your bonsai should be positioned where it will receive a good amount
of sun light, preferably morning sun and afternoon shade is best.
If you grow these outdoor bonsai trees in a container they can be
brought into the house on special occasions and displayed in a
prominent place for a few days at a time, providing it is not too
warm.
